Going Black and White

Black and white blob (1)

I recently read an article by Megan E. Holstein about her experiment with changing her phone display to a grayscale setting to see how it affected her phone use. I don’t use my phone much, but I do get distracted when I’m using my desktop computer by shiny pretty things that waste my time.

I’ve been using black and white display settings for a week now, and my results are very similar to Holstein’s experience with her phone–I seem to be able to do everything useful I need to do with my computer, and I’m less interested in just scrolling or clicking through meaningless, candy-colored crap. Bright colors can keep me looking at useless things that are much less compelling in black and white.

I also notice that when I turn the color back on–to better read a map or be able to see highlighted text or something–the display looks ridiculously brightly colored. I’m aware of its colorfulness in a way I wasn’t before. It looks garishly, annoyingly colorful.

I think I’m going to keep it black and white.

  1. I dunno, friend. My life is already too drab and lifeless…gotta get me some color where I can!

  2. I seem to remember a post from Uncle Vinny about being unable to distinguish between certain colors. Color blindness. I can see how the grayscale would be unappealing. Me, I think I’ll try it. I sometimes use the internet like a newspaper, but other times more like a tabloid. I think grayscale might help me stay in newspaper mode. Maybe.
