True was nominated for the 2010 Finlandia Prize, Finland’s most prestigious literary award. It is an exploration of the imaginative origins of story and the malleability of memory. It is about love and death. It is more mysterious than meets the eye. If, as Tolstoy said, unhappy families are unhappy in their own way, then this is a story of a happy family that experiences happiness and unhappiness the way we all do – universal joys and sorrows that we can recognize from our own lives. The meetings and partings of the characters in True are described with an utterly believable precision of psychological description that is a joy to read.
Naturally, I recommend it.
