Another Reason that Justice for Detainees Matters

An article on NPR quotes Khaled al-Anisi, the head of the Yemeni National Organization for Defending Rights and Freedoms, who neatly sums up why it’s not enough for President Obama to stop kidnapping and torturing if he does nothing to remedy the injustices already perpetrated on scores of innocent people held for years without charges at Guantanamo and elsewhere:

“Obama gave the people hope. And they lived one year with this hope,” Anisi says. “Now, the people start to think this is not a Bush problem or a Bush administration mistake, it is the mistake of all American people.”
