Laura Veirs: July Flame

This cut-paper animation for a song from Laura Veirs is so charming. I particularly like the way they used H. A. Rey star charts for the sky.

Found on the always interesting One Chord to Another.

  1. I was saddened by the forest fire until I saw the rabbit’s solution. “The end of innocence; all goes up in flames. Let’s break out the marshmallows!” Interesting philosophy.

  2. I took the fire to be a symbol of the sometimes overwhelming quality of erotic love (particularly a July flame) and the marshmallow roast as an expression of hope that love could in time become something comforting and fun if, like the raccoon, you make it fun.
