Earth Hour

Saturday, March 28th between 8:30 and 9:30 PM is Earth Hour, when people around the world turn off their lights for one hour to help us remember what the night sky looks like.

I’m not sure of the environmental usefulness of turning off unnecessary lights for one hour a year and then leaving them on for the other 8,759, but I’m quite sure of the poetic value of such an action.

There is an good article on light pollution (including very interesting photographs) in the November 2008 issue of National Geographic, or you can visit the International Dark-Sky Association for more information.
