Still Snowy in Seattle

snowflakeswilsonbentley

We rarely get any snow in Seattle. Normally it’s either cold and clear or rainy. Clouds and cold rarely combine. But we’ve had a thorough snowfall the past few days. It makes the city go quiet. Traffic is at a near standstill, and the snow muffles the sounds of the few cars that pass. We live on a busy street, and the sudden silence is refreshing.

People like me (and others – you know who you are) who grew up where it often snows are tempted to laugh at the way that Seattle comes to a halt at the slightest sign of snow or ice, but in fairness, the hills are so steep here that if this had been a place where it snowed a lot, Seattle never would have become a large city, because it’s simply impossible to get up and down many of the main roads when they’re slippery. Does it ever snow in San Francisco?

  1. Still snowy? This is the most snow I’ve seen since I left Spokane in 1994. But that’s good. Seattleites are getting some needed practice driving in icy conditions.

  2. I want you to know that whenever anyone brings up that tired old bit about Seattleites not knowing how to deal with snow, I remind them how hilly it is. Here in Spokane, where we have about 3 feet of it, we’re not doing so much better. All the side streets are impassable if they don’t get plowed. But it’s beautiful. The lawn furniture as morphed into giant blobs. The sidewalks are now ravines.
