Petition President Obama to Defend the Constitution

constitution-01Nothing has been more important to me in the recent presidential elections than the principle that the law and the constitution apply to everyone, including members of the executive branch. George Bush, Dick Cheney, and those who work for them have shown an unprecedented disregard for the law – warrantless spying on Americans, detention without charges, the suspension of habeas corpus, secret prisons, torture – the list goes on and on.

The prospect of a government that would repudiate the lawlessness of the last eight years has been a tremendous source of hope to millions of Americans. Now that we’ve elected a new president, it’s time to make sure that he honors his commitments to uphold the constitution.

There have been many anonymous leaks about all the things President Obama will or will not do when he takes up the presidency next year. One troubling report claims that Obama doesn’t plan to make significant changes to Bush/Cheney intelligence policy. Another says that Obama will make the closing of Guantanamo one of the first acts of his presidency.

Like all anonymous reports, these should be taken with a grain of salt. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t let the new president know what we expect from his leadership.

Barack Obama is a constitutional law scholar, and no doubt respects the importance of equal application of the law. Let’s hold him to those principles. To express your support for respect for the constitution, add your name to the People for the American Way petition to the president-elect and speak out about your vision for the presidency at the president-elect’s web site.
