Glen Campbell: Where’s the Playground Suzie?

I was just reading a review – a rather negative one – of the new Glen Campbell album over at Most Sincerely Folks (don’t let the name fool you – it’s a very good blog).

Personally, my favorite Glen Campbell songs are the tortured, melodramatic confrontations of “traditional” values and the new sexual mores of the 70s that were one of the best things about country music of that era. The most fascinating of these is Jimmy Webb’s Where’s the Playground Suzie?

Is that not the most evocative and bizarre lyric ever? Is it about swingers?

  1. Just Another Piece of Paper is my own personal favourite in this theme. The singer/narrator tries to come to terms with the trauma of discovering that something he thought was something solid -the loving marriage- never existed in the first place, and what remains ends up blowing around in an ’empty wind’.

  2. I don’t know if I’ve heard Just Another Piece of Paper. I’ll look for it.
