Little Girl Performs Scene from Waiting for Guffman
We rented Waiting for Guffman, my favorite Christopher Guest movie, and watched it again yesterday. We don’t usually bother with the director’s commentary, but we thought this one might be fun, so we listened. One intriguing comment was when Guest said that he has received a video of a family re-enactment of the play-within-the-play, Red White and Blaine, sent to him by fans of the film.
I immediately went to the internet to see if this family has posted their work online. I wasn’t able to find it, but I found a remarkably large number of other people who have shot footage of themselves re-enacting scenes from the movie. I guess it’s not surprising, considering the can-do spirit of the film.
The most popular scene to recreate is Libby-Mae’s audition monologue, which is available at YouTube in several different versions. Libby-Mae’s audition song also appears, as do her dreams of going to New York (performed by the same talented girl who appears here) and her description of Working at the DQ. Corky’s dance moves are also available from several sources. But this performance of Corky’s impassioned speech to the Blaine city council is the best of them all.
