The 21 Balloons

The 21 Balloons, written and illustrated by William Pene du Bois, was one of my favorite books as a child. It’s the story of Professor William Waterman Sherman, a 19th-century balloonist and inventor who crashes on the island of Krakatoa just before its historic volcanic eruption. The book is full of illustrations and diagrams of clever mechanical inventions.

  1. Quite the impressive contraption, I wonder if it could take you all the way to Rigel?

  2. Well, if it could, I hear Rigel is a nice place to vacation.
