Tove Jansson’s Illustrations for The Hobbit

Thanks to commenter Dr. Nick for making me aware of these terrific pictures. I’ve posted before about Tove Jansson’s classic Moomin books, but didn’t know she had made illustrations for a 1963 Swedish-language edition of The Hobbit. Blogger zepe has the complete illustrations from his own edition posted. Here are a few of them.

  1. Excellent pictures, very atmospheric and moody, but with a sense of fun too. Rather like the book.
Its especially appropriate as Tolkien drew heavily on the Finnish mythical cycle “Kalevala” in his own writings, he once said he wanted to create an Anglo-Saxon equivalent.

  2. I think my favorite is the one you chose as the header, the music making dwarves.

  3. I remember seeing the tiptoeing person illustration somewhere before. Someone should publish these in the U.S., just love her
    drawings.
