Happiest Girl in the Whole USA

There are a lot of classic country songs about long-suffering women. Kitty Wells’ disturbing song Talk Back Trembling Lips, Patsy Cline’s Crazy, and of course Tammy Wynette’s classic victim song, Stand By Your Man. But in 1972, Donna Fargo had a surprise hit with this sentimental little tune celebrating working life and a harmonious, egalitarian relationship. I like the way she thanks God for “letting life turn out the way that I always thought it could be”. In a somewhat bizarre juxtaposition, the German television show that she appears on in this video decided to project a montage of American flags and what seem to be girlie pictures behind her as she sings. More country music
