Ads from 1940 Look Magazine

Having just been engrossed in an interesting book about the second world war, I found this March, 1940 Look magazine that Rick brought home particularly fascinating.

Last year I posted an ad from a 1926 magazine recommending Lysol as a douche. Looks like they were still marketing themselves that way in 1940. This ad makes it a bit more clear that they’re talking about birth control as well as “daintiness” –

“Lysol” is a powerful germicide, active under practical conditions, effective in the presence of organic matter (such as dirt, mucus, serum, etc)… “Lysol” solutions spread because of a low surface tension, and thus virtually search out germs…

More ads are at Looky.

I’ll post some of the interesting articles some time soon.

  2. I don’t see the reference to birth control. Where is it?

  3. It’s not a direct reference, but an implied one. Particularly the claim that it is a “germicide, active under practical conditions, effective in the presence of organic matter (such as dirt, mucus, serum, etc)”. The Museum of Menstruation (http://www.mum.org/) has a lot of fascinating information about popular products used for birth control, including Lysol, and soda pop.
